The question: Kelley Koehler (@housechick) asked this question:
coffee or mocha? the waist says coffee, but the tongue screams mocha.
#wwgwd?

Wine is good for the hips This is a great question as we get into the holidays.  Keeping away the holiday pounds is a tough one.  Well, Kelly, the Starbucks mocha with whip has 330 calories.  Even worse, the eggnog latte and the peppermint white chocolate mocha have with an impressive 470 calories (540 with whip!).  Starbucks actually has a lighter menu.  Check out 20 choices under 200 calories. (My favorite, brewed coffee, has five calories! woot!)

But, to the bigger picture, do you indulge?

  • Secret tip #1- The most important thing you can do over the holidays is exercise.  For one, when you are exercising, you are unlikely to be eating or drinking.  Bonus points!! Even the best of us indulge during the holidays.  I am perfectly fine with a little indulgence, but it sure makes it a lot easier if you exercise to counter act your sins.
  • Secret tip #2- eat before you go to the holiday soiree.  Sounds counter intuitive, but if you eat something that fills you up but is very low on calories, you are less likely to over indulge at the party- you just won’t be hungry.
  • Secret tip #3- Choose your party drink wisely. Eggnog and brandy – close to 500 calories per serving.  Wine- at approximately 20 calories per ounce,  a full bottle of wine would contain approximately 525 calories. Bring on the wine people!!

Come on- who really wants to look at those holiday party pics and see an extra five pounds?  Yuck!

Take my advice and avoid the holiday pudge (drink wine!).
